PAS: Thin Your Carrots

The reverse of my carrot seed packet had very clear instructions:

1) Plant them directly into the ground, not in little planters. They don’t transplant well.
2) Do not plant them in rocky soil.
3) Thin the plants out when they start to sprout.
4) Thin the plants again a couple of weeks later.

So naturally, I started them in little plastic starter pots. Most of my seed packs are several years old and I didn’t want to give garden space to something that might not sprout.

My garden is in a raised bed, but the dirt under it is hella rocky. I turned it a bit but then dumped the garden soil on top. Lots of rocks starting about 4 inches down.

I did not thin the plants. At all. Some of my starter pots only sprouted a couple of carrots but one went crazy with sprouts! Which resulted in a SERIOUS carrot clump.

If I plant carrots again, I’m going to thin them.
