Trying my hand at Gardening

Growing up, my Grandpa had a wonderful garden! He grew all sorts of veggies, and spent most of the summer giving them away because he just had to much of them. Last year, I got a couple strawberry plants and the chipmunks made quick work of them. They didn’t make it through the winter, but some of the daughter plants that shot off of them seemed ok, so I transplanted them to a little section of the garden. A section I don’t have a picture of! All the plants are fruiting, and just as they start to ripen, the chipmunks swoop in again!

I had some carrot seeds, so I gave those a try. I didn’t thin them, so they’re growing around each other. They look pretty gnarly, and are pretty difficult to pull out.

We got 4 blueberry bushes for the front yard, along with 2 small apple trees. One of the blueberry bushes had a few berries on it, but a bird or critter got to them before they were ready to pick.

I started 6 green bean plants, and put the best 3 in the garden. 2 of those are VERY sad, but one is looking amazing! It doesn’t produce enough beans on its own to go with a meal, so I’ve been supplementing with store beans.

And the cucumber plants are KILLING IT! Every time I check, there are ready-to-pick cucumbers hiding under the leaves.

I have a couple pepper plants that haven’t grown over 5 inches in height, and I don’t expect to get anything from them this year. And I have a couple of beets going, because I love beets!

We got 2 of those 4 by 4 wooden garden beds from Home Depot and used one of them this year. I want to set the other one up next year, and maybe work my way up to a backyard of 4 by 4 garden boxes? I think it will help me with crop rotation because I’ll just have to remember which box had which plants in them.

I want to try a couple of tomato plants next year, some different peppers, and add more bean plants. I honestly didn’t think I would get anything out of this garden, so I’m excited to see what else I can do with it!
