Work shenans

Let’s face it; work can be a total drag. Doing the same thing, with the same people, every day, most days of the week. In school there was always a lot of emphasis on getting a good job with benefits and a stable pay check and maybe a little job security. But no one tells you how boring and tiring adult life can really be.

I spend my free time at work trying to find ways to brighten my own day. Selfish, I know. But usually in my quest to make myself smile or laugh, I can get a few other people smiling and laughing too. Those days are the BEST days.

1) Eraser dudes.

One day, I found a giant box of erasers at work in a mostly-neglected drawer. I waited a few months to make sure we weren’t actually using them for anything,  then I started crafting little people with them in between helping customers. After I make a bunch, I hide them around my office.

Sometimes they disappear or get pushed behind something or ‘jump’ into the trash…

Whatever. I think they’re hilarious.

2) Googly eyes.

You have to have to HAVE TO get the self-stick ones. I got a big bag of individual eyes, with 2 sizes, and carry them around in a little pouch with me.

I put them on staplers, plants, posters, magnets.

I even started making monsters! I like to encourage customers to do it, too, and give them some eyes to start with.

3) Write with the opposite hand.

I’m right handed. It’s challenging for me to write with my left hand. So if I write with my left hand at work, work becomes challenging but also much more interesting! It can be awkward when naturally left-handed people notice and say things like, “Hey! I’m a lefty too!” And without thinking I say, “Oh, I’m not.” Because then I have to explain why I’m writing with my left hand. My explanation sounds something like this: “I’m just practicing with my left hand in case something happens to my right hand and I can’t use it for a while, or anymore. That way I’ll be ready and not have to worry about learning to use my left hand while dealing with the loss of my right all at the same time. You know?”  That’s usually followed by an open mouth or blank stare.

4) Ant signs.

This is a new one. I shared yesterday in my “Recent projects” post that I made some little sings for the ants at work. Hey, guess what?! I got to use some signs this week!

Yes, this is the floor in our break room / kitchen. These little buggers get everywhere. I can hardly wait to use more signs and take more pictures! (Mixed feeling on that, for real though.)

5) Change clothes.

Sometimes I have extra clothes in my car. And when I’m  on a break, I’ll change something. My sweatshirt. My boots. My jeans. Over the course of the day I will either change several articles of clothing, or switch back and forth between two pairs of shoes or two shirts. Just to see if anyone notices. I’m not sure if it’s more fun when they notice or when they don’t, but they usually don’t.

Please share anything you do at work to make things more fun! And if you try any of these, let me know how they pan out!
